Dating back
to the 1540’s, local legend states that Coronado may have passed through Sky Mountain Ranch, New Mexico to get through the Zuni Mountain Range using the Large and Small Notches as landmarks to find the Seven Cities of Gold. The Small Notch is located on the southern border of Sky Mountain Ranch.
Sky Mountain
Ranch, New Mexico was homesteaded by the Mirabal family and operated as a sheep and cattle ranch until this day. At one time the Mirabals were the largest property owners in the state of New Mexico. The Mirabal family purchased the property in about 1905. Prior to that, the railroads had put in a line in the late 1800’s to transport timber being harvested from the property for the development of the west.
Cantina
Canyon, located on Sky Mountain Ranch, was the areas only local Cantina. Cattlemen, loggers, and outlaws must have used the bar to relax, gamble and socialize. It is local legend that a gunfight, at the Cantina, took the lives of two patrons. It is also rumored that Billy the Kid once inhabited the area and many locals acknowledge and attest to the rumor. Dead patrons, Billy the Kid, and rumors of a lost gold mine all add to the rich Southwest mystery of Sky Mountain Ranch, New Mexico. |
